OARC Head Coach (x1) and Associate Coaches (x2-3)

Oxford Academicals Rowing Club (OARC, or Accies for short) is a friendly, supportive and flexible rowing club, with an adult-only membership across three squads: men, women and development (mixed). We’re one of the three “town” clubs in Oxford and, despite the name, have no affiliation with university or college rowing. Our membership is growing quickly, and we are looking for enthusiastic and committed coaches to join us at an exciting time for the club.

About Us
We are a flexible and inclusive club. Our rowers range from novices to those with decades of experience, and include people wanting a more recreational approach as well as people wishing to train hard and compete. We recognise that our members have commitments away from rowing, and so we don’t have set crews outside of specific race preparation. We are proud of the inclusive and integrated nature of our squads, and maintaining this ethos is vital to the club.

In a typical year, we would be looking to race at Wallingford, Reading, Quintin, Abingdon, (WE)HORR and Vets Head through the winter, and at a mixture of local and weekend camping regattas over the summer. Depending on commitment and ability of those wishing to race, we also support rowers looking to enter higher-level regattas including Met, Women’s Henley and Henley Royal.

Who We Are Looking For
1 Head Coach, who will provide the following services:

  • Work with our squad captains to develop overarching training plans for season
  • Provide overall coordination of coaching, ensuring that all coaching is consistent with club rowing style & overall training plan
  • Obtain and collate feedback from Associate Coaches
  • Provide consolidated feedback to squad captains, and input to (racing) crew selections
  • Develop high-level outing plans for uncoached outings
  • Regularly coach outings across all squads
  • Advise on and help with rigging
  • 2-3 Associate Coaches, who will provide the following services:

  • Regularly coach outings across all squads
  • Develop and adapt their own outing plans in line with club rowing style and the overall training plan
  • Provide feedback and recommendations to the Head Coach
  • About You

  • You must be happy to coach a broad spectrum of abilities across the Club, happy to coach across all three squads, and be confident in coaching adults.
  • Ideally, you will be available for more than a year (strongly desired for the Head Coach role).
  • You will have experience of rowing and/or coaching outside of collegiate rowing.
  • RYA Level 2 desirable
  • For the Head Coach role, previous experience of coordinating other coaches and developing training plans is desirable.

    Please contact oarcsecretary@gmail.com

Coaching will primarily be from the bank on the Isis in Oxford (Head of the River to Iffley Lock), but from time-to-time coaches may be requested to accompany outings outside of Oxford, or potentially to join us on training camps (we had a very successful trip to Seville in February 2020).

Outings are on weekday mornings before work (off the water by 8 am), weekday evenings in summer, and double sessions on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Coaches provide their availability each week and are then allocated to sessions on a discretionary basis as appropriate.

The club will pay coaching fees, on a per-session basis, invoiced by the coaches in arrears at the end of each calendar month. For the Head Coach, a time allowance for coaching coordination services will also be invoiceable.
