This March, Academicals’ women squad fielded two 8+ in the Women’s Eights Head of the River Race, rowing the 6.8km on the Tideway, from the University Stone in Chiswick to the finish at Putney Pier. A total number of 295 crews took part in the race. The journey to WEHoRR was not without its trials and tribulations: a few of the original crew members were forced to drop out due to illness and injury, but our friends from Linacre and Pembroke College Boat Clubs gamely step in at short notice. In a Herculian effort, four Accies journeyed to London the night before the big day to rig the boats, racing against the light and the clock. With blue skies for race day, Accies W8+A (Holly Kirk, Hannah Cornwell, Jonna Vuoskoski, Julie Schulthess, Nora Stappert, Jacqui Murphy, Kate Millar, Anna Stepashova) coxed by Brian Tang, completed the course in 23:51.9 finishing 194th, and the Accies/Linacre composite (Kate Erickson, Laura Droessler (Linacre), Gemma Clucas (Linacre), Fiona Sanderson, Shan Quah, Carolina Arancibia, Agnieska Swiejkowska, Órlaith Burke), coxed by Jon Marsden, in 24:29.6, finishing 230th. Special thanks go to Claire Bratley, who could not row due to injury, but rigged boats and was the Accies official photographer on the day, and to Diarmuid Fehily and Shan Quah for getting the squad to WEHORR – Accies WILL return to the Tideway!
